May 16, 2022
Starting Monday, May 16, 2022, Zoom at UMass Amherst accounts will require at least one security setting. UMass Amherst Information Technology (IT) and the vendor are making these changes to protect your Zoom experience from evolving cybersecurity threats.
Zoom Security Basics
Check Your Meetings and Settings
1. Check your recurring and previously scheduled meetings
- Log in to your Zoom at UMass Amherst account at umass-amherst.zoom.us.
- On the left side of the screen, click Meetings.
- On the Meetings screen, click Edit to the right of any meeting.
- Under Security, choose one of the three options. For an overview of what it's like to join a meeting with each of these options, see our YouTube playlist.
- Passcode. Participants will be prompted for a password to join the meeting.
- Waiting Room. Participants will be placed in a waiting room before the meeting host can approve them to enter the meeting.
- Require authentication to join. Participants will need to log in to Zoom or Zoom at UMass Amherst to join your meetings.
- Recurring and previously scheduled meetings with no security setting will be assigned a waiting room by default after May 16. If a waiting room does not work for your recurring or previously scheduled meetings, choose another security setting.
2. Set up a default security option for future meetings
Choose to protect your meetings using a passcode, waiting room, or login (authentication). After May 16, Waiting Room will be automatically assigned to your recurring, scheduled, and future Zoom meetings unless you specify otherwise.
- Log in to your Zoom at UMass Amherst account at umass-amherst.zoom.us.
- Click Settings on the left side of the screen.
- Under Security, choose default options that will work for you.
What To Expect After May 16

- Meeting participants can communicate without interrupting by clicking additional icons (yes, no, slow down, speed up, coffee cup).
- Meeting participants and webinar panelists can rename themselves.
- Hosts will be notified 7 days before the cloud recording is permanently deleted from trash.
