In response to information security threats detected in the past week, two-step login (a.k.a. multi-factor authentication) will be required to access the university’s virtual private network (VPN) service starting, Thursday, September 9, 2021. VPN is available to UMass Amherst faculty, staff, researchers, and some students.
With two-step login, you verify your identity with your password, then use a physical device such as a mobile phone, tablet, or landline phone to complete the login. This approach further protects your account from fraudulent access.
Steps You Need to Take
- If you are not using two-step login for HR Direct or other campus services, you must enroll in two-step login by noon on Thursday, September 9. If you already have two-step login enabled for at least one campus service, no action is required.
- Starting Thursday, September 9, 2021 afternoon, you will be prompted for your second factor as you connect to the VPN service. Be sure to have your additional device ready.
We appreciate your flexibility with this short notice. We are expanding the use of two-step login across IT and administrative services to further protect the campus technology environment as well as your privacy and personal data.
