Moodle in the Cloud Updates for Instructors

April 5, 2021

This April, Moodle in the Cloud, an upgraded version of Moodle, is available for summer and fall university courses at umass.moonami.com.

  • Starting today, April 5, instructors teaching summer courses can request their Moodle course shells and start setting up their courses. Courses are not visible to students until May 10, the start of Preview Week, or when the instructor opens the course.
  • Later this April, instructors teaching fall courses may request their Moodle course shells in SPIRE. Ad-hoc courses will also be available in the new Moodle.
  • The current version of Moodle remains available for spring 2021 and past semesters as well as current ad-hoc courses. Both versions of Moodle will run concurrently, but no course will be offered in both versions.
  • The Instructional Media Lab is available to support you in this transition. Any questions can be directed to instruct@umass.edu.

Moodle in the Cloud Highlights

The new version of Moodle comes with several enhancements for students and instructors, including:

  • A searchable, sortable list of course participants that is FERPA-compliant and allows students to communicate with others in their class.
  • Optimized forums, including a full grading interface, the ability to send private replies to students, lock discussions, inline posts & replies, and forum summary reports.
  • Ability to “favorite” courses, activity types, and discussions.
  • Friendlier presentation of grading and statistics.
  • And much more...

I am teaching this summer. What are my next steps?

  1. Starting today, April 5, you can request your Moodle course shell in SPIRE

  3. Once Moodle administrators notify you that your Moodle shell is ready, use the course backup to import content into your new Moodle course
  4. Log in to the Moodle in the Cloud at https://umass.moonami.com. Review our Moodle in the Cloud Highlights for what to expect in the new version of Moodle.
  5. If you are teaching in the first summer session, get your course ready by May 10. The first day of the first summer session is May 17.
  6. Contact the Instructional Media Lab if you have questions or need assistance.
  7. Remind your students that their Moodle course is available at https://umass.moonami.com.

I am teaching this fall. What should I expect?

  1. We will let you know when you can request your fall 2021 Moodle course(s) and any other changes that may affect Moodle before the end of the summer.
  2. Later this April, you will be able to request Moodle course shells in SPIRE. At that time, you can indicate whether you want to reuse an existing Moodle course.
  3. Once Moodle administrators notify you that your Moodle shell is ready, you can start working on your course.
    • If you are setting up your course before June 2021, you will need to back up your course and import the course backup manually.
    • Starting this June, you can request that your course content be moved automatically from the old version of Moodle to the new.
  4. Review our Moodle in the Cloud Highlights for what to expect in the new version of Moodle. More features and plugins will be enabled in the next few months.
  5. Contact the Instructional Media Lab if you have questions or need assistance.
  6. Plan to have your Moodle course(s) ready for Preview Week starting August 25. Remind your students that their Moodle course is available at umass.moonami.com.
