UMass Amherst electronic mailing lists (a.k.a. listservs) will undergo a few exciting changes this spring. Here's a sneak peek:
- Mailing lists will be moved from Mailman, our legacy platform, to Google Groups in late February. Final dates are pending.
- List names (the email address of a list) are not changing. You will be able to post and receive messages from the campus mailing lists to which you subscribe just as before. Once the move to Google Groups is complete, list managers and subscribers will update settings and preferences in Google Groups.
- Members of the campus community will request new lists powered by Google Groups in SPIRE.
- These changes do not affect class email lists, which were upgraded to Google Groups in spring 2020.
More details, including step-by-step instructions, will be available in the coming days and weeks. Learn more about Google Groups
Service changes and transitions are critical to UMass Amherst’s continuous digital transformation. Given its aging under-the-hood infrastructure, Mailman is no longer reliable for message delivery. Google Groups provide a superior user experience and better integration with Google Drive, Calendar, and other apps in Google Workspace.
