Security Alert! New Phishing Scam Targets UMass Amherst Community - Monday, 11/2

November 2, 2020

On November 2, 2020 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject "Quick response" began targeting UMass Amherst email users.

The email appears to have been sent by "Jennifer Lundquist," and asks the recipient to "Give me your available text number that I can reach you at."

Caution: This email did not come from the University of Massachusetts. It is a phishing scam designed to trick you into providing your personal information or other things of value.

On November 2, 2020, a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “COVID-19 Alert System” began targeting UMass Amherst email users.

The email notifies the recipient “All Staff are required to Login COVID-19 Alert System to see their tasks and schedules” and provides a link to “COVID-19 Alert System”. The links in the message direct the recipient to a fraudulent version of a UMass Amherst login page.

On October 30, 2020 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “Quick Response” began targeting UMass Amherst email users. The email appears to have been sent by “Jennifer Randall,” and tells the recipient “Give me your available text number that I can reach you.”

On October 28, 2020 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “1 Impοrtant pending message” began targeting UMass Amherst email users. The email appears to have been sent by “IT Service Desk,” and tells the recipient “You have 1 important message from IT Service Desk.” The message includes a link to "View," which directs the recipient to a fraudulent version of a UMass Amherst login page.
