Security Alert! New Phishing Scam Targets UMass Amherst Community - Tues., 1/19

January 13, 2021

On January 19, 2021 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “Just send your cellphone number” began targeting UMass Amherst email users.

The email appears to have been sent by “Stephen Sireci” and asks the recipient “Kindly reply back with your personal text number ASAP."

Caution: This email did not come from the University of Massachusetts. It is a phishing scam designed to trick you into providing your personal information or other things of value.

January 6, 2021

On January 6, 2021 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “Student Research Assistant – Job Available-” began targeting UMass Amherst email users.

The email appears to have been sent by “Elizabeth R. Bertone-Johnson, Ph.D.” and informs the recipient “I need an Assistant to work remotely from the comfort of your home as a temporary research aide."

Caution: This email did not come from the University of Massachusetts. It is a phishing scam designed to trick you into providing your personal information or other things of value.

On January 5, 2021 a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject “Assistant Work” began targeting UMass Amherst email users.

The email appears to have been sent by “Dr Andrew Mangels” and asks the recipient "See attached."

Caution: This email did not come from the University of Massachusetts. It is a phishing scam designed to trick you into providing your personal information or other things of value.
