Starting today, February 26, 2019, graduate students can switch their university email account from UMail to UMass Amherst Google Mail. Google Mail is part of Apps at UMass Amherst, Google’s suite of productivity and collaboration tools customized especially for our campus.
This does not apply to graduate students already using Google Mail, Microsoft Exchange, or a department-provided email service.
Graduate students who choose to switchover will see their existing email messages be copied from UMail to Google Mail automatically (a process that may take up to 48 hours, depending on the size of their inbox).
Students who do not switch to Google Mail before the end of the spring semester (May 14) will have their UMail account automatically moved to Google Mail this summer as UMail, the university’s legacy email service since 1999 will be retired and will no longer be available.
Immediate benefits of the new email accounts include:
Larger, unlimited storage capacity
Drastically improved and simplified user interface
Integration with Apps at UMass Amherst, including Google Drive and Calendar
