Azure Virtual Desktop at UMass Amherst

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), formerly Windows Virtual Desktop, is a comprehensive desktop and app virtualization service running in the cloud. At UMass Amherst, AVD is used as a virtual workspace where students, faculty, and staff can access Windows desktop and applications remotely from any location. Please note that quality of connection to AVD will depend on the network strength used to connect your device.

  • Ability to connect from a standard web browser using a web client or remote desktop app client using Windows, MacOS, iOS, or Android device. 
  • WVD uses less bandwidth and computer resources for users experiencing performance issues with their device.
  • Access to specialized software required for schoolwork.

Save and Access Files

Save any of your work to your UMass OneDrive account. OneDrive account on AVD UMass Classroom remote desktop is listed as OneDrive – University of Massachusetts.

While using AVD, you are automatically logged in to UMass OneDrive and files saved in AVD Desktop, Documents, Pictures folders are automatically saved to your UMass OneDrive account. Please allow up to five minutes for your UMass OneDrive account to sync with AVD.
