Mathematica is available at University of Massachusetts at Amherst, so Wolfram is holding a free training for students to get up to speed with the software. Faculty love this training because students can complete it outside of class, freeing up class time that would normally be spent introducing Mathematica. On Friday, October 20, a crowded house of social scientists, computer scientists, and planners gathered in the new ISSR lab to discuss insights emerging from a National Science Foundation funded project on the social sciences and big data. Leading the dialogue were the project’s principal investigators, who have each been program directors at the National Science Foundation: Susan Sterett, Director of the School of Public Policy and Professor of Political Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Kelly Joyce, Director of the Science, Technology & Society Center and Professor of Sociology at Drexel University.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announce the availability of public-use files (PUF) for the questionnaire data from the first wave of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. The PATH Study PUF are downloadable from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR).

A fascinating showcase of research by scholars and practitioners from around the Five Colleges showed how spatial analysis – the study of social and material dynamics through their patterns in physical space – can offer new layers of understanding about the natural and social patterns and inequalities all around us. 

Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship.
