Description: This three-morning workshop will get you up and running with coding and analyzing your qualitative data in NVivo 11. The first day will focus on the basics: importing, organizing, and beginning to code your data (text documents, surveys, web pages, videos and audio). The second day will focus on structuring your project and linking additional data (e.g. demographic information) to your project items. The third day, we'll introduce ways to explore your data with queries and other analysis tools. Each day, we'll also offer optional open lab times when the instructors will be available to help you apply the techniques you learned in the morning to your own data. This is a great opportunity to solidify your learning and get hands-on help with your project. *This course will be taught in the Windows version of NVivo. Although the Mac version of NVivo has similar (albeit somewhat more limited) functionality, the interface is sufficiently different to make a dual-platform workshop unfeasible. If you are a Mac user, you are welcome to take the course using an ISSR Windows-based laptop and bring your own Mac to follow along on your own. Please contact the instructors for more information.
Instructors: Eric Griffith and Ashley Carpenter
Eric Griffith is a research methods consultant at ISSR and PhD student in the Anthropology Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Eric specializes in qualitative research methods and NVivo software training. He received his B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Boston University and an M.A. in Neuropsychology from Boston University. At UMass, Eric is working on his dissertation project about cross-cultural variations in Alzheimer's disease under the direction of Dr. Lynnette Sievert. His primary research interests include aging, neurodegenerative disease, biocultural research, and mental illness.
Ashley Carpenter is a research methods consultant at ISSR and a PhD student in the Higher Education Department at UMass-Amherst. She received her BA in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and her MA in American Culture Studies from Washington University-STL. Her research interests include minortized communities, pre-college programs, retention, access/equity, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. Her dissertation explores marginalized students (i.e. students of color, first-generation, low-income) who participate in pre-college programs, and their transition from high school to college.
