The intellectual and professional returns of academic collaboration are both well-known and hard to come by. This panel explores the added layers of richness and complexity that arise when scholars of science and technology pursue interdisciplinary collaboration across national boundaries. Discussion of three ambitious projects highlights the theoretical rewards and practical dynamics of international and interdisciplinary collaboration. A light luncheon will be served.

Panel:

• Salman Hameed (Astronomy | Hampshire College) explores the reception of science in the Muslim world. His most recent work proposes to engage scholars from seven countries across disciplines to understand how Muslims view the relationship between science and religion.​
• Laurel Smith-Doerr (Sociology | University of Massachusetts, Amherst) explores the dynamics of gender and power in scientific collaboration and organizations. She will share lessons from her work as co-editor to build a truly international and interdisciplinary set of chapters for the Handbook Science and Technology Studies, 4th edition (MIT Press).
• Kathrin Zippel (Sociology | Northeastern University) studies the globalizing gender politics of work and organization. Her new book, Women in Global Science (Stanford University Press), shows how international collaboration offers pathways around gendered barriers to advancement for women in STEM careers.
