ISSR Methodology Workshop | Data Manipulation in R

Thursday, November 8, 2018 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm
E20 Machmer Hall | UMass Amherst

Instructor: Andrea Cataldo

One of the greatest benefits of using R for statistical analyses is its flexibility in defining and reshaping data structures. This workshop is designed for individuals who wish to become more comfortable manipulating data outside of a spreadsheet format. Participants will review a range of techniques for defining, reorganizing, and summarizing data in R using base functions as well as functions from the dplyr and reshape2 packages. Participants should have some prior experience with R.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define new data structures (vectors, matrices, data frames, arrays, and lists)
  • Reshape data between wide and long formats
  • Create subsets of larger data structures and combine separate data structures
  • Transform data using conditional statements or by applying summary statistics
