Monday, March 11, 2024 - 9:00am to 12:00pm
Online Event - Login link via email for registered participants

Instructor: Brittni Howard

In this introductory workshop, we introduce the basics of Photovoice design. Photovoice is a qualitative research method and a community organizing tool. Participants speak their truth through photos, short narratives, and focus group discussions. Researchers and participants work together to explore research questions, create themes and prompts for participants to take photos of, organize and categorize photos, and then discuss the photos in focus groups discussions. In this 3-hour workshop (on zoom), you will be introduced to basic Photovoice design elements and common ethical principles. You will have the opportunity to play the role of Photovoice participants and workshop theme-making and photo-taking (with photos you take in advance - preparation before the workshop sent via email).

No Prerequisite.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the basics of Photovoice (a specific type of photo elicitation)
  2. Practice creating themes and prompts as a Photovoice participant
  3. Take photos of the group-generated themes
  4. Unpack the challenges, complexities, and ethical considerations of generating themes and taking photos from the participant perspective
