Pluto Davis

API: Maynooth University, Ireland

Hi! My name is Pluto Davis (they/them). I’m a senior here at UMass, majoring in Linguistics and Social Thought and Political Economy (STPEC), minoring in History, and working towards a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) Certificate. I studied abroad at Maynooth University just outside of Dublin, Ireland in Spring 2023.

Spending the semester hopping between castles and cliff walks all around Ireland was an incredible experience that I would absolutely recommend. I learned so much about Irish culture, history, and language both inside and outside of my classes. Some of my favorite memories were just walking around Dublin, exploring the city for the best restaurants, shops, bubble tea places, seeing the stunning Cliffs of Moher, and playing trivia at the local pub with my friends!

My advice is to make your abroad experience your own. Many people will recommend that you always say yes to any opportunities, friendships, trips, or events that come your way - and I am no way discouraging that - but make sure to take care of your wants and needs too. When I was abroad, I really wanted to go to Spain, but all of my friends were either busy or didn’t want to go. I didn’t let that stop me - I went to Barcelona by myself! It was scary going somewhere new on my own, but I ended up having an amazing time, and that trip ended up being one of my favorite memories from being abroad! So from anything as simple as going to a different restaurant for dinner, or taking a trip you would prefer - don't be afraid to prioritize yourself.
