IPO/UMass Amherst/Five College Scholarships

IPO Scholarships

Deadlines: April 30 for summer, fall, and academic year programs. November 1 for spring, winter session, and calendar year programs.

Education Abroad Scholarship

  • Awards start at $500 per semester
  • For students with high financial need
  • Available for summer, winter session, fall, spring, calendar year, and academic year programs

Students applying to study abroad through an approved API program who plan to apply for an API Full-Ride Scholarship should not submit an application for an Education Abroad Scholarship. Students not selected for an API Full-Ride Scholarship award will automatically be considered for an Education Abroad Scholarship award.

Education Abroad Merit Scholarship

  • Awards are $1,000 per semester
  • Minimum 3.8 GPA
  • Available for fall, spring, calendar year, and academic year programs

IPO/API Scholarship

Deadlines: March 30 for summer, fall, and academic year programs. October 1 for spring and calendar year programs.

API Full-Ride Scholarship for UMass Amherst Students

  • Open to any student who participates in a UMass-approved API program and meets the eligibility requirements.
  • Scholarship covers the full program cost of your API study abroad program.
  • An additional scholarship for $750 will be awarded to be used towards your flight.
  • The Education Abroad fee will be waived by IPO.
  • Two scholarships are available each application cycle.
  • Available for fall, academic year, spring, calendar year, and summer programs (Not open to students participating in either a short-or long-term UMass Custom Programs).

Students not selected to receive an API Full-Ride Scholarship award will automatically be considered for an IPO Education Abroad Scholarship (see above). Please do not submit a separate Education Abroad Scholarship application.

Sara's Wish Foundation Scholarship

Sara's Wish Foundation was established to perpetuate the memory of Sara Christie Schewe, with a mission to sustain Sara’s loving spirit by promoting travel safety standards and practices around the globe and by providing financial support to young women working in the areas of education, health care, and/or public service in the global community.

  • Open to students who will pursue education abroad experiences related to education, public health, health care, public service, service learning, environmental sustainability, or a similar humanitarian/civic engagement field. Applicants in other fields should still consider applying.  Submissions will be evaluated holistically.
  • Preference will be given to female students, as well as first generation college students
  • Must have demonstrated high financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Two $2500 scholarships to be awarded
  • Available for winter session, spring, and calendar year programs

UMass Scholarships

UMass Scholarships Through AcademicWorks

AcademicWorks is a third-party scholarship management system that streamlines the scholarship search and application process for UMass students. Apply through AcademicWorks in order to be considered for various scholarship opportunities offered by different departments on campus. One application matches you to opportunities and supplemental applications may be required for certain departments. 

Award amounts vary, some award up to $1,000. Opportunities found on AcademicWorks include over 15 study abroad scholarships for:

  • Commonwealth Honors College
  • Isenberg School of Management
  • Language Study
  • Oxford Summer Seminar
  • & more

Five College Scholarships

Charles Mark Scholarship for Foreign Language in its Target Country

  • Awards vary in the $900-$1,500 range
  • For UMass undergrads and grads
  • Must be studying a language through the 5 College Language Center and return to UMass to complete degree after study abroad

Charles Mark Scholarship for the Study of Less-Commonly Taught Languages

  • Awards vary in the $900-$1,500 range
  • For UMass undergrads and grads
  • Must be studying a less-commonly taught language through the Five College Center for World Languages. Preference will be given to students of of the Balkan-Slavic languages
