National Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

  • Awards are up to $5,000 depending on financial need and your length of study.
  • Must study abroad on UMass approved program and be a U.S. citizen receiving a Pell Grant either at time of application and/or during study abroad term.
  • First generation students, students with disabilities, and veterans are encouraged to apply.

Benjamin A. Gilman-McCain Scholarship

  • Awards are $5,000. 
  • Citizen or National of US enrolled as undergrad at accredited college/university.
  • Dependent child or spouse of active duty military member.
  • Recipient of ANY type of federal Title IV financial aid (Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized or Unsubsidized Direct Loan).
  • Applying for UMass approved, credit bearing study abroad program in an approved country/area.

Boren Scholarships for Study Abroad

  • US citizen enrolled as undergrad at UMass Amherst.
  • For one semester or full year in limited geographic areas and languages.
  • Awards are up to $25,000 for a full academic year; $12,500 per semester; $8,000 for summer programs of 8-11 weeks duration (STEM majors only).

Critical Language Scholarships Intensive Summer Institute

  • Covers most of the costs of participating in its overseas institutes.
  • Must be U.S. citizens enrolled as undergrads or grads in an accredited U.S. degree granting program and have a desire to study one of specified languages.

Diversity Abroad

  • Multiple scholarships are available through their searchable database.
  • Offers scholarships for students from diverse backgrounds to study abroad.

Fulbright Program

  • Includes round-trip transportation to the host country; funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country.
  • Must be U.S. citizen and graduating senior, recently graduated, or current graduate student interested in teaching, studying, or conducting research overseas.

Fund for Education Abroad

  • Awards up to $10,000 for academic year programs and $5,000 for semester programs. Summer awards vary based on program duration.
  • Students must be undergraduate U.S. citizens, DACA recipients, or permanent residents who will study abroad on a UMass approved program of at least 4 weeks duration.
  • Preference to students of color, first-generation college students, and students with high financial need.

Golden Key National Honor Society

  • Awards up to $5,000.
  • For Golden Key Society members who are undergraduates, graduates or post-graduates in a degree-granting program; and enrolled in a study abroad program for which academic credit will be received.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

  • Awards one hundred twenty-five $1,000 grants each year for students to study abroad.
  • Must be a UMass Amherst student with a minimum 3.75 GPA and have applied to an approved study abroad program before their deadline.

Middlebury College: Davis Fellows for Peace

  • Covers tuition, room, and board for one summer in any of the 11 Language Schools Middlebury College offers at any level of study.
  • To be considered for a Fellowship you must be accepted by one of the Middlebury Language Schools and meet all additional application requirements.

National Society of Collegiate Scholars

  • Scholar Abroad Fall and Spring Scholarships. One $2,500 scholarship awarded each semester.
  • Applicants must be undergraduates, an NSCS member (current or alumni), and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Recipients are selected based on their commitment to academics, leadership, and service.
