National Scholarships

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

  • Awards are up to $5,000 depending on financial need and your length of study
  • Must study abroad on UMass approved program of at least 3 weeks duration and be a U.S. citizen receiving a Pell Grant either at time of application and/or during study abroad term
  • First generation students, students with disabilities, and veterans are also encouraged to apply

Benjamin A. Gilman-McCain Scholarship

  • Awards are $5,000. 
  • US citizen enrolled as undergrad at accredited college/university
  • Dependent child of active duty military member
  • Recipient of ANY type of federal Title IV financial aid (Pell Grant, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Subsidized or Unsubsidized Direct Loan)
  • Applying for UMass approved, credit bearing study abroad program of at least 3 weeks duration

Boren Scholarships for Study Abroad

  • US citizen enrolled as undergrad at UMass Amherst
  • For one semester or full year in limited geographic areas and languages
  • Awards are up to $20,000 for a full academic year; $10,000 per semester; $8,000 for summer STEM programs (8+ weeks)

Critical Language Scholarships Intensive Summer Institute

  • Covers most of the costs of participating in its overseas institutes
  • Must be U.S. citizens enrolled as undergrads or grads in an accredited U.S. degree granting program and have a desire to study one of specified languages

Diversity Abroad

  • Multiple scholarships are available through their searchable database
  • Offers scholarships for students from diverse backgrounds to study abroad

Fulbright Program

  • Includes round-trip transportation to the host country; funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country
  • Must be U.S. citizen and graduating senior, recently graduated, or current graduate student interested in teaching, studying, or conducting research overseas

Fund for Education Abroad

  • Awards range from $1,250 to $10,000 based on financial need and time abroad
  • Students must be undergraduate U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will study abroad on a UMass approved program of at least 4 weeks duration
  • Preference to students with demonstrated financial need, first generation college students, and minority students

Golden Key National Honor Society

  • Awards up to $5,000
  • For Golden Key Society members who are undergraduates, graduates or post-graduates in a degree-granting program; and enrolled in a study abroad program for which academic credit will be received

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

  • Awards seventy-five $1,000 grants each year for students to study abroad
  • Must be a UMass Amherst student with a minimum 3.75 GPA and have applied to an approved study abroad program before their deadline

Middlebury College: Davis Fellows for Peace

  • Covers tuition, room, and board for one summer in any of the 11 Language Schools Middlebury College offers at any level of study
  • To be considered for a Fellowship you must be accepted by one of the Middlebury Language Schools and meet all additional application requirements

National Society of Collegiate Scholars

  • Two $2,500 scholarships are awarded to members studying abroad during fall, spring or summer.
  • Applicants must be undergraduates, an NSCS member (current or alumni), and have a minimum 3.4 GPA
