Before you move in, make sure you turn on or transfer utility services that are your responsibility. If you are unsure of what your responsibility is or who the utility provider is in your neighborhood, ask the landlord. It is generally the responsibility of the tenant to put the electric bill into his or her own name and address.

If you share utility expenses with your roommates, have a written agreement of:

Setting up online bill paying is convenient and ensures you won't miss a payment. Make sure you and your roommates have in writing that each of you will pay your percentages of the bill.
