Policies
Course Approval and Credit
- All courses on approved study abroad programs count toward your graduation credits, but you must receive pre-approval for courses that fulfill requirements.
- In most cases, a C- is required for courses taken abroad to count toward major, minor, or certificate requirements. Check with your department for more information.
- Courses cannot be taken pass/fail.
- UMass credit is granted for foreign language courses taken abroad only if they are above the level already completed at UMass. Repeated courses cannot be accepted for the language requirement. Specific level placement is not guaranteed. For more details, consult your Education Abroad Advisor during the application process.
- Junior Year Writing and the Integrative Experience can't be taken abroad.
Enrollment and Grading
- You must maintain full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 UMass credits) during your semester abroad.
- Grades from courses abroad won't affect your UMass Amherst GPA (except for some faculty-taught programs), but the grades, credits, and course titles will appear on your transcript. However, employers and graduate schools may recalculate your GPA.
- Grading scales vary by country and institution, so ensure you understand how they translate to UMass standards.
Academic Considerations and Key Processes for Studying Abroad
When planning to study abroad, it’s important to consider various academic aspects and understand the course approval processes to stay on track towards your degree and certificate programs.
While selecting your program, use the tools below to help with your search. Explore what students have previously studied and how to choose courses from different program catalogs.
- Determine which requirements you need to fulfill: Check your Academic Requirements Report (ARR) on SPIRE to see what courses you still need to take.
- Research courses abroad: Search the course databases and course catalogs abroad to find which programs offer the courses you need.
- UMass Abroad Program Search– Use the “Program Match Quiz” and/or search tools to find programs that offer courses in your department. Navigate from UMass Abroad to the program’s website and browse the course catalogs.
- International Gen Ed Database - This list displays pre-approved courses but is not a complete list of Gen Eds abroad.
During the application process, the UMass Abroad portal will guide you through getting pre-approval for courses in your major, and you should also seek approval for minor or certificate courses. For details on requesting and obtaining course approvals, visit these links.
Upon return, your courses and grades will be added to SPIRE. To ensure a smooth transfer, follow these steps:
- Request an electronic official transcript from your host institution sent directly to @email. UMass does not accept transcripts directly from students in most cases.
- Once your grades have been posted to SPIRE, check your unofficial transcript to see your courses and confirm that there are no issues. Email iporegistrar@umass.edu if you see any errors.
- If you took courses for your minor or certificate while abroad, work with your department to gain the necessary credit once your courses abroad have transferred.
Average timeline of when grades/courses from abroad appear on SPIRE:
Time Abroad | Grades/Courses Posted on Spire |
---|---|
Fall & Winter | April/May |
Spring & Summer | September/October |
If your last semester of your degree is abroad, read the graduation requirements page for more information and important dates. Your transcript should be sent to @email at a minimum of three weeks prior to the graduation deadline listed on the page referenced above.
Academic Accommodations Abroad
While certain programs abroad may provide comparable academic accommodations for students registered with UMass Disability Services, it's crucial to recognize that not all programs offer uniform levels of support and accessibility.
