Studying abroad provides a unique opportunity for cultural and self-exploration, as well as a chance to reflect upon your identity in a new context, but it can also create some discomfort. When choosing a study abroad program, we encourage you to research different cultural norms and perceptions of racial and ethnic identities that exist in your host country. It is also important to be aware of your own expectations and cultural assumptions. These factors can have an impact on your experience abroad, and while you may do everything you can to prepare yourself, there could still be hardships and challenges you experience.

Just as your life at home will have ups and downs, your time abroad will as well, and you should feel confident in knowing that there is no right or wrong way in navigating your experience, as long as you are safe. Relying on your strengths and leaning on your support system is key to ensuring an enjoyable and meaningful time abroad.

Below are some resources to consider as you prepare for your study abroad journey.
