In an educational landscape increasingly defined by rapidly evolving technology and shifting societal dynamics, the essence of teaching should remain rooted in the human connection. This is the message from the IIF fellows during the second meeting of the 2023 Instructional Innovation Fellowship on Friday, October 13, 2023, at Bartlett Hall.

Four fellows presented unique teaching approaches that can enhance student engagement and foster empathy. Dandan Xu demonstrated game-based learning in her engineering class; Bjorn Nordtveit showed the use of Mentimeter to ignite student engagement; Lisa Lehmberg presented the benefits of using a human library project in her music education class; and Allie Wolf showed how language use in the syllabus can foster a more empathetic classroom environment.

Key takeaways:

  • Gamification can enhance students' engagement and participation in the course
  • Live polling tools can aid group discussions in large and small class size
  • Human library projects can provide meaningful discussions and perspectives on teaching and learning
  • A trauma-informed approach to writing can provide students with a safe and empathetic classroom environment
