ChatGPT, renowned for its rapid processing capabilities, has made AI more accessible and visible to the general public. It is one of the fastest AI tools employed across various professions. Yet, it's just one among thousands of AI tools available today, each with unique applications and implications. As students increasingly use AI in their school and/or professional work, teaching them to be responsible AI users has become crucial. Torrey Trust, professor of learning technology at the College of Education UMass Amherst, presented her ideas on teaching students to become critical AI users as part of the IDEAS Tech-Tech-Talks (TTT) series on May 8, 2024. In her talk, Prof. Trust discussed “nine things students should know about generative AI chatbots."

Tips for Teaching AI Literacy
Teachers have an important role in teaching AI literacy to their students so that they become critical and responsible AI users. Some tips for teaching AI literacy include:
- Identifying Ethical Issues: Bring students’ attention to the ethical dilemmas presented by AI use (e.g., bias, hallucinations, misinformation, human labor, privacy and data, digital divide, and environmental impact). Have them critically examine AI using the course content as a lens.
- Encouraging Creative Thinking: Use AI to enhance creativity while understanding its limitations. For example, students ask AI chatbots some critical questions and follow up the answers with more critical questions.
- Questioning Outputs: Teach students to always question AI outputs. For example, they can ask why the output is the way it is or what would happen if anyone could create something that looks legitimate. The goal is not to let students take AI outputs for granted.
As AI tools evolve and become more integrated into our classrooms, students' ability to critically engage with this technology is becoming crucial. Teachers should help students develop a critical understanding of AI by teaching them critical AI literacy
