Welcome to the second meeting of the 2024-2025 Instructional Innovation Fellowship! This month, three fellows presented their innovative teaching strategies for making classrooms relevant to today’s learners, where students are increasingly influenced by technology and diverse learning needs. Each fellow modeled unique approaches to address common challenges faced in their classrooms, including low participation, reading engagement, and large class management.
Our first presenter, Anne-Marie Sylvia, an instructor in the Kinesiology Department, brought Socratic Debate to life through memes. The next presenter, Alejandro Beas-Murillo, an instructor in the English Department, demonstrated character mapping and annotation strategies for teaching students to become active readers. Lastly, Kevin C. Klement, a professor in the Department of Philosophy, shared a software he created called the LogicPenguin Project to help provide practice opportunities and feedback for students in his Introduction to Logic course. Let’s learn more about these innovative teaching strategies.
Key takeaways:
- Modernizing traditional teaching methods with digital tools, like memes, can boost student engagement and participation.
- Offering varied, creative approaches to reading and response practices, such as mind mapping and annotations, encourages deeper comprehension and improves writing skills.
- Interactive feedback systems like LogicPenguin provide scalable solutions for large classes, enhancing learning while reducing the burden on instructors.
