The IDEAS team is excited to welcome the fellows selected for the 2024-2025 Instructional Innovation Fellowship (IIF). These passionate educators represent various disciplines at UMass Amherst, from English and Philosophy to Health Sciences and Chemistry. The fellowship, now in its third year, unites innovative educators, fosters valuable connections, and provides a collaborative space for mutual learning because, as we believe, we’re always stronger together!
After introductions and welcoming activities, we heard from our first two fellows. Dr. Anna Fox Reilly, Lecturer in the Higher Education Program in the College of Education, posed and answered a thought-provoking question: How do we accommodate diverse student needs in the same class? Dr. Aline Gubrium, Professor & Program Head of Community Health Education in the Health Promotion and Policy Department, took on the challenge of making health promotion more humanizing.
Key takeaways:
- “Choose Your Own Adventure” Assignment Plans empower students by giving them agency over their learning paths.
- Digital Storytelling provides a safe space and social connections between students and the community regarding health issues.

Reflections
Both Anna and Aline demonstrate the innovative spirit of UMass instructors in their teaching methods. They are strongly committed to honoring individual student differences and connecting the classroom to the broader community. While different teaching contexts present unique affordances and challenges, sharing these experiences among faculty members can lead to rich discussions for personal and professional growth.
