Communities of Practice

The Instructional Video Creators Network is a community of practice where educators can experiment, share ideas, and support one another in educational video production techniques. Oftentimes, participants share their videos for peer feedback and critique. Participants identified several themes to boost the quality and impact of educational content:

  • Visual Anchors: Using recurring icons throughout a video helps viewers stay oriented and reinforces key ideas.
  • Smart Slide Design: If you’re working with a slide packed with info, try breaking it up with b-roll or cutaways to keep things visually engaging.
  • Forward-Looking Content: Dropping subtle hints about future readings or topics can help students make connections across the course.
  • Mood Matching: Background music should match the tone of your video—whether it’s energizing, reflective, or purely instructional.
  • Enhanced Imagery: Adding text overlays to images can clarify meaning and guide interpretation.
  • Creative Composition: Pairing static shots with moving text is a great way to highlight key points and keep things dynamic.

These insights reflect a shared commitment to designing media that truly enhances the student experience.
