Teaching and learning demand substantial time and energy investments, which can lead to instructor and student burnout alike—a topic of increasing concern among teachers. At this year’s concluding session of the Instructional Innovation Fellowship (IIF), three fellows shared their insights and strategies for fostering a classroom environment rooted in empathy, creativity, and socio-emotional well-being for both teachers and students. Sofija Zagarins highlighted innovative methods to incorporate formative assessments that enrich student engagement without overwhelming their academic schedules. Leah Barber explored empathetic discussions in her poetry classes through the creative use of Google Translate. Meanwhile, Ali Soken addressed the often-overlooked issue of emotional labor in teaching, emphasizing its impact on educator well-being.

Key takeaways:

  • Strategic use of formative assessments can boost student engagement without burdening their academic demand.
  • Creative use of translation tools can open up new avenues for literary expression and multicultural understanding.
  • Effective management of emotional labor in teaching can create a supportive educational environment and prevent teacher burnout.
