On the cold morning of December 15th, the IDEAS Instructional Innovation Fellows gathered at the Bartlett Building for the fourth meeting of the 2023 Fellowship. Despite the chill, there was an air of enthusiasm among the educators, ready to tackle the day's agenda. In this meeting, four fellows presented their concerns and innovative teaching methods that have helped them navigate the challenges and opportunities teaching in the current technology-driven world. Leah Barber showed her ways to minimize the misuse of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, in first-year writing courses. At the same time, Dhiroj P. Koirala demonstrated how generative AI ChatGPT brings opportunities to provide games and simulations in his economic classes. With her CUREs method, Kelly Klingler showed what it means to bring research skills to her classrooms, and Greeley Kyle emphasized the importance of virtual presence in video conferencing tools such as Zoom.
Key takeaways:
- Teaching AI literacy is crucial for writing classes
- Generative AI can amplify teaching economics through games and simulations
- The mix of real-world research and technology can transform STEM classes
- Virtual presence is as important as physical
