At a recent Instructional Innovation Fellowship (IIF) meeting, three faculty members shared creative ways to enhance student engagement and learning:
- Bo Kim, an instructor in the Department of Art in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, emphasized the importance of supporting students through their “fear zones” with content and engagement by facilitating low-tech strategies such as blind contour drawing, celebration days, and a liquid syllabus.
- Shubha Tewari, Senior Lecturer II in the Department of Physics in the College of Natural Sciences, shared strategies for using Smartphones and the app Phyphox to support ways in which students observe and make sense of their observations.
- Sravan Surampudi, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Natural Sciences, presented the Peer-Led Team Learning framework offered to students enrolled in Organic Chemistry.
Their insights highlight the importance of honoring and supporting the student’s academic journeys and the power of engagement in building confidence, community, and deeper learning.
