Registration for the Fall 2024 Essentials of Online Teaching Course is now open! The course will run from October 16th to November 20th.
During the Fall 2024 semester, the IDEAS team will be facilitating the next 6-week Essentials of Online Teaching - The Canvas Edition course. This opportunity is open to any UMass instructor interested in: learning how to develop and teach effective online courses, using teaching technologies meaningfully, and receiving personalized support in the process of designing their online courses. It focuses on five essential components:
- Foundations of online teaching
- Structure and Design
- Assessment
- Engagement
- Communication
Through reading and exploring resources, engaging in learning activities, and collaborating with their colleagues, participants will develop strategies for using resources and technologies to enhance their online courses. Each week, instructors will put these strategies into practice and build out a different aspect of their course, receiving feedback from their colleagues and course facilitators. Participants who fulfill all course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion and their department head will be notified.
Participants will attend 6 synchronous Zoom sessions (Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) and complete weekly asynchronous learning modules for a total commitment of approximately 3-4 hours per week.
Please note: This course is not a tutorial on how to use the basic technical aspects of Canvas. For an overview of technical Canvas features, please explore the Canvas Training and Resources Course.
Self-Paced Course Available
If you're interested in the Essentials of Online Teaching Course but are unable to attend synchronous sessions, we recommend registering for our self-guided course.
