IALS Interview with Xian

Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

Dr. Xian Du received his PhD degree in the program of Innovation of Manufacturing Systems and Technology from the Singapore-MIT Alliance. His current research focuses on health monitoring and quality control of advanced manufacturing processes through the integration of physics-informed machine learning, in-situ metrology, and multi-modal sensing. His ongoing projects span various areas, including scalable additive manufacturing, objective pain assessment, and quantitative analysis of clinical images. Dr. Xian Du is a recipient of the 2020 NSF Career Award and IEEE 2024 Region 1 Technological Innovation (Academic) Award for pioneering contributions to advancing machine intelligence and sensing technologies in roll-to-roll flexible electronics printing and medical devices for health monitoring.

Current Research

  1. Online inspection and feedback control for roll-to-roll flexible electronics printing processes.
  2. Chronic pain monitoring and assessment for long-term care residents with ADRD using AI Sensing. 
  3. Development of a hand-held OCT probe with 3-D imaging-assisted tracking.
