For many technology-based startups creating and securing intellectual property is essential to building a company development and fund raising. Patents, copyrighting, trademarks, trade secrets, and licensing are all tools that can be used to build value. Founders are challenged to leverage these tools to create value and reduce risk, while constrained by scarce resources and before they have retained intellectual property counsel for the company. To help UMass Amherst startups and pre-startups address these challenges, IALS Venture Development offers Intellectual Property Law Office Hours with Tani Chen, ScD, for founders who want to gain a better understanding of legal issues in support of their efforts toward startup formation, team development, and working with investors.
Tani Chen is a shareholder at Wolf, Greenfield & Saks, PC where he counsels clients in patent prosecution in a wide variety of areas, including biomolecular engineering, nanotechnology, tissue engineering, drug delivery, fuel cells, chemical processes and analytical devices. Tani has a particular focus on small businesses and university research, and has helped companies develop strong IP protection based on their business goals and potential threats from competitors. Tani particularly enjoys working with startup companies to help strengthen their competitive positions in the marketplace through patent prosecution, trade secret protection, diligence of competitor interests, identification of whitespace and potential barriers to entry, and the like.
