The Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) is the catalyst for applied life science programs on the UMass Amherst campus and enables industry/academic alliances. This is achieved by creating a ‘portfolio’ of translational life science projects based on faculty and student strengths in basic sciences on the campus and from collaborators. These capabilities position UMass Amherst as a regional resource for applied life sciences, novel industry relationships, and economic development in Massachusetts.
IALS contributes to the creation and advancement of new ventures and product candidates based on discoveries from students, faculty mentors and their collaborators. This has led to the development of a vibrant and collaborative startup community.
IALS actively seeks to expand and strengthen collaborations across the campus and beyond. In partnership with the Isenberg School of Management, the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, the UMass Innovation Institute, and the Technology Transfer Office, IALS is developing new models for collaborative entrepreneurship that help campus ventures to create value as they achieve milestones, secure resources, and develop product candidates.
