IALS Seminar Series

Learn how our faculty work with the UMass Core Facilities and gain insight into research on campus.

Throughout the series, we will be featuring both individual core facilities and their relevant technologies, as well as hearing from faculty about how they use these technologies in their research. All seminars are on Tuesdays from 2-3 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to discover what great resources that the centralized UMass Core Facilities offer to our campus community and the New England region. Our goal is to make these events informational and interactive.

Spring 2024

Apr 23 2024 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Sarah Perry, Department of Chemical Engineering, Models to Medicine Center. Complex coacervates are self-assembling materials that are analogous to biological condensates found in cells. We explore the use of these materials to uptake proteins and viruses, and improve their thermal stability.

Apr 25 2024 - 8:30am to 9:45am

Dr. William Kraus, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology Medicine and the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute.

Apr 30 2024 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

David Follette, Director of ADDFab. Come learn about our newest 3D printer. It has an open architecture, so we can print in a wide variety of materials from nylon, to polypropylene, to many different soft polymers. There will be hands on samples to play with.

May 7 2024 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Alissa Rothchild, Veterinary & Animal Science, Models to Medicine Center. As the first cells infected in the lung by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, alveolar macrophages play and important role of initiating the host immune response. This seminar will cover research by the Rothchild lab on the sentinel responses of alveolar macrophages within the lung environment.

May 14 2024 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Elena Pobezinskaya, Models to Medicine Center, Flow Cytometry, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Immune system has a remarkable feature of “remembering” pathogens and responding to the second encounter faster and more vigorously. The formation of immunological memory is a fascinating area of research and we still have a lot to learn.
