IALS Interview with Anna Green

Anna Green, PhD

Professor Green is an Assistant Professor in the Manning College of Information & Computer Sciences, and a member of the Models to Medicine Center in IALS.

IALS: Hi Anna, thank you for speaking with us today. We have a few questions for you so everyone on campus can get to know you better. How long have you been at UMass Amherst?

AG: I just started at UMass Amherst on September 1st, 2023.

IALS: Where did you grow up?

AG: I'm a New England native. I grew up in Storrs, Connecticut - which is a rural university town much like Amherst!

IALS: Does the love of science run in your family?

AG: Yes! Both of my parents do psychology research on language acquisition in kids.

IALS: How long have you been teaching?

AG: My first teaching experience was 10 years ago when I TA-ed for a Science of Cooking class.

IALS: What is more stressful, grant proposals, research, or teaching?

AG: Research is the most stressful because you never really know if it will work, and your mentees are counting on you to have a successful experience!

IALS: Assuming your research is widely successful, how will it impact society?

AG: My research goal is to understand the genetic basis of antibiotic resistance - this would lead us to slow down the antibiotic resistance crisis through better diagnosis and treatment selection. Even better, we could discover new drugs and perhaps predict the evolution of resistance before it even happens.

IALS: Who do you admire and why?

AG: I admire our international students at UMass, who take a big risk to come to a new country, often learning a new language, to pursue their education.

IALS: What are your interests when you are not a scientist?

AG: I love cooking and baking, vegetable and flower gardening, all things science fiction, and D&D. Right now most of my time is spent with my family (husband, 1-year-old daughter, and dog).

IALS: Thank you so much Anna.

We would like to thank Anna Green for her time!
