Nucleic Acid Delivery

Research Themes:
  • Center for Bioactive Delivery

RNA is on the path to revolutionizing medicine as we know it. The Nucleic Acid theme focuses on developing platform technologies and payloads for the cellular delivery of nucleic acids, offering targeted approaches for treating genetic, infectious, and chronic diseases. This team aims to develop delivery technologies for the efficient, safe, and targeted delivery of nucleic acids, including DNA, mRNA, miRNA, siRNA, and CRISPR components, with a focus on enhancing transfection efficiency, therapeutic potency, and biocompatibility. Therapeutic applications include gene expression (gene replacement therapies), gene knockdown/regulation, and genome editing (CRISPR). The delivery of Cas9 protein (or mRNA encoding Cas9) coupled with an indication-specific guide RNA to target modification and/or regulation of specific genes illustrates the wide potential of nucleic acids as biologics. Others in the theme are developing novel RNAs for biosensing and bioimaging applications.
