Amplify Your Science by Collaborating with the IALS Core Facilities Staff

IALS core staff members can contribute to your research programs by offering deep expertise and new ideas for experimental design, data collection, and analysis methods. This spring semester, the Light Microscopy Facility Director James Chambers and various staff members, including undergraduate students, have been included as co-authors on four manuscripts (IALS core staff are italicized and highlighted in author lists).  In all these examples, core staff made significant scientific contributions and were deemed critical to the published work.  For some staff members, this represents their first scientific publication.

When any scientists’ contribution to a paper is deemed critical, authorship is certainly appreciated. The Association for Biomolecular Resource Facilities has specific guidance that we have found helpful when determining authorship. Additionally, it is always important to acknowledge the funding agencies who have made our core facilities possible by including specific language in your manuscript submissions. Talk to your core facility staff to obtain examples of acknowledgements that help publicize the work of the individuals in the core, the core facility, IALS, and the University as a whole.

Any general questions can be directed to the Core Facilities Director, Seth Glass.
