MA Paid Family Medical Leave Law

In 2018 Massachusetts signed into law a statute providing paid family and medical leave (PFML) benefits effective January 1, 2021 & requiring taxes to be paid on wages for covered employees starting October 1, 2019. The University of Massachusetts System Office has posted helpful PFML FAQs.

The University of Massachusetts System is notifying employees of the PFML and corresponding tax withholdings via an e-mail sent over the weekend of September 7, 2019. Employees are asked to either 'acknowledge receipt' of the PFML Notice or 'decline to acknowledge receipt' of that notice.

Employees are encouraged to respond via the PFML tile on the HR Direct Employee Self Service page. Employees also have the option of completing a hard-copy "PFML Notice Acknowledgement Form" and returning it to one of the following locations. The PFML notice and acknowledgement form are also available online and hard-copy at each of the following drop-off locations:

  • UMass Amherst Human Resources Employee Service Center
  • UMass Amherst Auxiliary Enterprises Human Resources Office, 918 Campus Center
  • UMass Amherst Facilities & Campus Services Human Resources Office, room 214, 360 Campus Center Way
