Benefited Employees

Dental insurance coverage provided benefited employees differs by the bargaining unit representing an employee's position:

  • AFSCME and PSU/MTA: Dental and vision coverages are effective the first day of the month following 6 months of covered employment at no cost to the member. Coverage information is available from the plan administrator, MA Public Employees Fund.
  • USA/MTA and MSP/MTA : dental coverage is effective the first day of the month following 6 months of covered employment at no cost to the member. Coverage information is available from the plan administrator, Health Plans, Inc.

    MetLife offers a VisionAccess Discount plan to those covered under the USA and MSP dental plan.
  • IBPO: dental insurance coverage information is available from the plan administrator, Insurance Administrators, Inc. (tel. 617-773.8947).
  • Non-Unit: dental coverage is effective the first day of the month following 60 days of covered employment; employees contribute to the premium for elected coverage. Coverage information is available from the plan administrator, Health Plans, Inc.

    Non-unit employees contribute to the non-unit dental insurance premium, premiums are payroll-deducted twice monthly:
        Individual coverage    $11.40 twice monthly
        Family coverage         $22.80 twice monthly
    MetLife offers a VisionAccess Discount plan to those covered under the Non-Unit dental plan.
  • NEPBA: dental insurance coverage information is available from the plan administrator, Benefits Strategies.
  • GEO: dental, vision and wellness coverage information is available from the UAW Health and Welfare Trust Fund.
  • Post-Doctoral Employees:  dental, vision and wellness coverage information is available from the UAW Health and Welfare Trust Fund.

Individuals who purchase health insurance through the MA Group Insurance Commission (GIC) also have vision coverage through their GIC health insurance plan. All plans provide one eye exam every two years for a copay; some plans also provide a discount on purchase of eyewear. Please reference documents related to your specific GIC health insurance plan for more information.

Non-Benefited Employees

The Commonwealth Connector is Massachusetts’ health and dental insurance marketplace (established under the federal Affordable Care Act) and provides options for Massachusetts residents to purchase health and dental insurance coverages and apply for federal premium subsidies to reduce the cost of coverage.
