We have been notified by the University System Office that the new tax tables have been implemented in HR Direct as required by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Withholdings based on the new tables appeared in the pay check of February 9, 2018.
Although personal exemptions have been eliminated, current faculty and staff are not required to complete a new Form W-4 (Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate). Other changes, including the increase to the standard deduction, will affect total taxes, but not withholdings. Faculty and staff are encouraged to discuss the change in the standard deduction and other potential impacts with their tax preparer or personal accountant.
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has updated their federal withholding calculator to account for changes in the 2018 tax code. The calculator helps individuals determine how many exemptions to claim for W-4 purposes and is available on the IRS website.
Employees can update their tax exemptions online in HR Direct or by completing and submitting a 2018 W-4 Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate to the UMass Amherst Human Resources Employee Service Center.
