Getting Started: The New Employee Onboarding Checklist
Starting a new job is an exciting journey, filled with opportunities for growth and connection. We’re here to make sure you feel supported and confident in your new role. This onboarding checklist is designed to help you transition smoothly, ensuring you feel welcomed and prepared from day one.
Week 1 - Welcome to UMass Amherst: Your Journey Begins Here!
Welcome to UMass Amherst! We are thrilled to have you on board and want to ensure you get off to a smooth start. To help you hit the ground running, here are a few important tasks that may need your attention:
Payroll and Benefits Orientation: Have you attended your benefits orientation? If not, please contact your department administrator to get signed up and receive the necessary email.
New Hire Paperwork: Make sure the new hire paperwork you received at your email address is complete. Need help? Just let us know!
Parking Pass: Obtain your parking pass: You can pick up a temporary parking pass immediately at the Transportation Services office (Whitmore Building, Room 139). Permanent passes will be available after you receive your first paycheck.
GIC Enrollment: Sign up for the Group Insurance Commission (GIC) health insurance in the GIC portal. This is necessary for accessing your health insurance benefits.
Flexible Spending Account (FSA): An FSA can help you save on healthcare and dependent care expenses. Learn more and enroll if it's right for you.
Campus Tools: Find convenient links to campus maps, organizational charts, and university calendars.
Software Access:
If your position involves working on a computer, be sure to confirm with your supervisor that you have access to the following essential software and that they can guide you on how to use it.
- Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
- OneDrive
There may also be specialized software required for your role. Your supervisor will provide details or direct you on how to obtain the necessary programs.

Week 3 - Essential Resources for Your First Few Weeks
We hope your first few weeks have been exciting and productive! Here are some essential resources to help you settle in and thrive:
- Meet the Chancellor: Get to know our Chancellor, Javier A. Reyes, and learn about his vision for UMass Amherst and commitment to our community.
- Take a Virtual Campus Tour: Get familiar with our beautiful campus!
- Payroll Information: Access the payroll calendar and view your pay statement online through HR Direct.
- Pick Up Your UCard: Your UCard serves as your employee ID, library card, and more. Don't forget to pick it up!
- Secure Your Parking: Make sure you have requested your permanent parking pass after receiving your first paycheck.
- Stay Safe: Complete the active threat training and sign up for emergency text alerts to stay informed and prepared for emergencies.
