Deepika Singh, political science and Middle Eastern studies double major, has been selected to be the student speaker at the 2019 Celebration of Excellence. The event, taking place at the Mullins Center on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m., will recognize Honors graduates and present each graduating senior with a gold-colored stole to later wear during the University Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10.
Deepika, who is also graduating with a certificate in international relations, has earned numerous scholarships during her studies at UMass Amherst, including the prestigious Christopher C. Gardner Scholarship Award. She was also named a UMass Women in Leadership fellow in 2018. In the next phase of her journey, Deepika has elected to step out of her comfort zone and serve for two years in Cambodia as a Peace Corps volunteer. There she will teach English and work on a community development project. When she returns, Deepika plans to attend law school to study international relations.
