Professor Ronald Story holds degrees from Texas-Austin, Wisconsin-Madison, and SUNY Stony Brook and began his career at UMass-Amherst in 1972, where he has published extensively in social, religious, military and political history. Among his publications are The Forging of an Aristocracy: Harvard and the Boston Upper Class, 1800-1870 (1980), A Concise Historical Atlas of World War Two: The Geography of Conquest (2006), and Jonathan Edwards and the Gospel of Love (2012). He is co-author of Generations of Americans: A History of the United States (1976) and The Rise of Conservatism in America, 1945-2000 (2008).
Professor Story has edited or co-edited A More Perfect Union: Documents in U.S. History (multiple editions, 1984-2009), Sports in Massachusetts (1991), Five Colleges: Five Histories (1993), and The Other Jonathan Edwards: Selected Writings on Society, Justice, and Love (2015). He has also provided content for a CD-ROM, The American Civil War (1996); produced a website, The Jackie Robinson Educational Archives (1999); appeared as a "talking head" in television documentaries on Harvard and UMass Amherst; and provided a lengthy recorded commentary on recent UMass history for the university archives.
Professor Story served brief terms as academic vice president for the UMass system and advancement vice chancellor for UMass Amherst, where he also served as secretary of the faculty senate and president of the faculty union, high points of his career. Highest point of all: receiving, a few years before his retirement, the campus's Distinguished Teaching Award, a lifetime achievement.
