My name is Matthew Smith and I am a first year graduate student. During my undergraduate career, I completed the dual degree program for English and History at UMass while writing my undergraduate thesis focusing stories of peoplehood and their influence on national identity. In addition, I studied archaeology extensively which started my interest in public history. Currently, I am researching monumental structures and the way they are used to manipulate collective memory as well as how we interact with monumental structures and spaces which reflect values that are no longer socio-culturally viable.
While I am completing my graduate studies, I am working full-time at with UMass Residential Life Student Services as a Residential Service Desk Coordinator. While not directly related to my studies, this position allows me to gain skills in management, administration, and customer service that will be invaluable as I move forward with my career.
