Waging Peace in Vietnam,” an exhibit documenting the antiwar dissent of active duty military personnel and veterans during the Vietnam War, will be on display at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from September 23 through October 11 in the main lobby of the Integrative Learning Center.

Assembled by Ron Carver, the exhibit features photographs, underground newspapers, and other documents from this bold and little-known movement.

Graduate student Ross Caputi will be a panelist at the event on October 11. Jason Higgins, also a graduate student in the history department will teach a practicum for undergraduate students, who will serve as docents for the exhibit. Professor Christian Appy, renowned historian of the Vietnam War, co-organized the series and will moderate the book launch and panel discussion on 27 September. Professor Appy says that he is “thrilled that “Waging Peace in Vietnam” will be coming to UMass (September 23 through October 11). This exhibit vividly documents a largely unknown history of antiwar activism among active duty GIs and veterans during the Vietnam War. I hope students and faculty will visit the exhibit (Integrative Learning Center, main lobby) and attend the panel discussions and film screenings that will further develop this compelling history and its relevance today."

In conjunction with “Waging Peace in Vietnam,” there will be two panel discussions and two documentary films.

These events are co-sponsored by the Department of History, the Program in Comparative Literature, the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the Writing Program, the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies, Special Collections and University Archives, and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
