Professor Julio Capó, Jr. has received another prestigious award for his latest book, Welcome to Fairyland: Queer Miami Before 1940. The 2018 Charles S. Sydnor Award from the Southern Historical Association recognizes the best book written on Southern history.
The selection committee noted that “Welcome to Fairyland makes the compelling case that Miami has been a ‘queer borderland for over a century’ which included the policing of Caribbean migrants’ sexualities as they navigated the nascent city as transnational laborers who were excluded from enjoying the advertised ‘Fairyland’ crafted by white urban boosters. In making its award, the prize committee commended Capó’s ‘strong writing, deep research, grounding in the theories and methodologies of multiple sub-fields of history.... [Welcome to Fairyland] is a book about southern erotic life with national significance.’”
