UMass Amherst history department alumnus Kenneth R. Feinberg ‘67, ‘02 Hon received the Distinguished Leader Award at the UMass Alumni Honors Event on October 10th, 2024. The honor celebrates alumni who have translated their UMass Amherst experience into professional success and meaningful service, furthering the mission and impact of the university around the globe.
A renowned lawyer, mediator, and arbitrator, Feinberg’s work has “helped to resolve many of the nation’s most challenging and widely known disputes.” Read Kenneth R. Feinberg’s full bio here.

History alumnus Michael J. Nicholson '16 '17 MPP
History alumnus Michael J. Nicholson ‘16 ‘17 MPP recently received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award for his work as mayor of Gardner, Massachusetts. Since 2020, Nicholson oversaw Gardner’s Covid-19 response and vaccine clinic, invested in the city’s infrastructure, and broke ground on the first elementary school.
At UMass, Nicholson earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees: cum laude in history and political science and two undergraduate certificates in international relations and public administration. He then completed UMass’ one-year accelerated master of public policy in 2017.
