Professor Garrett Washington has been awarded a Japanese Studies Fellowship from the Japan Foundation.

The Japan Foundation, established in 1972, is Japan’s only institution dedicated to carrying out comprehensive international cultural exchange programs throughout the world. For its Japanese Studies Fellowships, approximately five scholars from the US join a cohort of fellows from other countries to carry out research in the Japanese humanities and social sciences.

Professor Washington will be hosted at Kokugakuin University in Tokyo for the Spring semester 2026 where he will be doing research for his next project "Faith in the Realm: Laywomen and Japanese Imperialisms."
