Professor Sigrid Schmalzer just received another award for her picture book Moth and Wasp, Soil and Ocean: Remembering Chinese Scientist Pu Zhelong's Work for Sustainable Farming. She is the recipient of the 2018 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award in the children’s category.
Since 1991, the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award has honored the legacy of Sigurd Olson, who attended Northland College and is the namesake of the College’s environmental institute, by recognizing and encouraging contemporary writers who seek to carry on his tradition of nature writing.
Previously, Professor Schmalzer’s book had won the 2018 Freeman Book Award for children's literature on East and Southeast Asia and was listed as a Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2019 and a CCBC Choices 2019 book by the Cooperative Children's Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
