Book Release for 'The Work of Empire: War, Occupation, and the Making of American Colonialism in Cuba and the Philippines'

As the Trump administration seems to be returning the United States to the aggressive imperialism of the past, with threats to annex Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, understanding how and why Americans actually acquired an overseas empire in 1898 is may be more important than ever. Please join Professor Justin F. Jackson the author and the UMass Amherst history department  Five College History program in learning how ordinary laborers shaped the U.S. wars and occupations in Cuba and the Philippines that so greatly determined Americans' colonial projects in these islands. A brief reading and comments from the author will be followed with discussion and celebration.

Justin F. Jackson is an Associate Professor of History at Bard College at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and a Visiting Scholar with the Department of History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
