A Conversation on Public Education When the World's on Fire

An Evening Assembly with Gwen Agna and Vijay Prashad

Beloved educator and community leader Gwen Agna has been principal of Jackson Street Elementary School in Northampton, Massachusetts for 24 years. At the end of this school year, she is retiring. In an "evening assembly" convened to commemorate her work, she will join local activist and internationally renowned historian Vijay Prashad to reflect on the past, present, and future of public education in an age of anxiety, to help us understand what has been possible and to imagine what can be possible for educating children. Throughout Gwen and Vijay will reflect on her long career as an educator, and ask what it means to hope while living through an unending battery of crises.

Gwen Agna has been an educator for more than four decades, teaching in schools in Ohio, Rhode Island and Massachusetts and serving as an administrator in the Northampton Public Schools, first as the Early Childhood and Civil Rights Coordinator, then as principal of the Jackson St. Elementary School. She believes that public schools and their teachers must be supported and adequately funded, as the foundation for our democratic society. She recognizes the complex role educators play in today’s society -- as instructors, guides, advocates, and holders of childhood and the rights of children and their families.

He has written twenty-five books, including the two volume history The Darker Nations and The Poorer Nations; and he has edited twenty books, including Liberate the Colonies. For twenty-five years he has been a foreign correspondent for Frontline, India's national magazine. Prashad holds a PhD in history from the University of Chicago.
