Author Talk Series with Ilan Stavans,"Trump and the English Language"
The Libraries started the Author Talk Series this year with the goal of celebrating authors and books with a connection to UMass Amherst, the Four Colleges, and the local community and to provide an opportunity to connect the campus community and the public with the Libraries. Featured authors will be from the Five Colleges and beyond. Following our inaugural fall series of three events, the spring will also see three in February, March, and April.
Ilan Stavans of Amherst College will give the first talk "Trump and the English Language" that he describes as follow: "The age of Trump is not only about a divided America but about a fractured syntax and an impoverished lexicon. Can we make English great again?"
Ilan Stavans is the Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities, Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College, publisher of Restless Books, and host of the NEPR podcast “In Contrast.” He previously published Dictionary Days (Graywolf), Spanglish (Harper), and A Most Imperfect Union (Basic).
The event will be in room 2601 of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, on February 8th, from 5pm to 7pm and include a reception.
